SANYO MAKES HOME A SAFE HAVEN FOR ALLERGY SUFFERERS

London, April 2, 2008: SANYO Europe Ltd. (SANYO) today announced that their revolutionary new air cleaner has been awarded the Seal of Approval by Allergy UK. In extensive testing carried out by Allergy UK the unit was found to significantly reduce occurrences of pollen, mould, house dust mites and cat allergen. It is estimated that one in three of the UK population suffer from an Allergy of some kind and approximately 5% of all GP consultations are allergy related.

Jules Payne - Deputy Chief Executive of Allergy UK commented. "Allergy UK is pleased to award the Seal of Approval to the SANYO ABC-VW24. In addition to its stylish design, it proved to be very effective in removing some of the common allergens that are found in the home, and can be a contributory factor to Asthma, Hay Fever and other allergies. We are pleased to learn of SANYO’S commitment to products that improve all of our living environments and look forward to more products from SANYO that offer benefits to allergy sufferers."

The ability to suppress pollen and dust mite allergens was highlighted by the Allergy UK testing. For the purpose of testing, house dust, grass pollen and fungi were released into a test room. The particle levels were then analyzed before and during the operation of the 'virus washer' technologyair purifying system, with a further test run following a 48 hour break, in order to test the unit after aging. Results show that the SANYO unit reduced airborne Der p1 and Fel d 1 allergens, pollen and mould spores, as well as delivered an overall reduction of airborne dust particles.

The SANYO Domestic Virus Washer combines a high-performance five-layer filter and a unique disinfectant electrolyzed mist in order to purify air in the home and remove odours like tobacco and pets. Electrolyzed mist is created by combining tap water with electricity.

Room air is then cleaned by spraying this long-lasting mist that is able to disperse widely throughout the room. Hydroxyl radicals and hypochlorous acid contained in the electrolyzed mist work together to suppress viruses, bacteria, dust mite allergens and pollen airborne contaminants, disinfecting and deodorizing as it passes through the airfor optimal air quality. Electrolyzed water technology has also been found to suppress more than 99 per cent of airborne viruses (including the Influenza Virus PR8, Avian influenza – H5 type and Feline Caliciviridae, a virus comparable to the norovirus surrogate), along with a wide range of larger particles like pollen, making the technology ideal to comfort those suffering from Hay Fever and other allergiesin this upcoming season.

Masafumi Yoda, General Manager of Europe Business Management Division, SANYO Electric Co. Ltd, said: "Over recent years there has been a noticeable reduction in air quality in many towns and cities. This has led to an increased number of people suffering from allergies, such as Hay Fever. This latest test proves yet again the effectiveness of our electrolyzed water technology and application. With our proprietary air purification systems, people can enjoy peace of mind as we help control the cause of the allergies instead of encouraging people to treat the symptoms as they arise."

The SANYO Domestic Air Purifying System is lightweight, weighing only 7kg and is designed for use in rooms up to 40m² in size. The unit, sporting a simple design, is easy to install and is the thinnest air purifier in its class, fitting into almost any domestic setting.

SANYO'S GREEN REVOLUTION LEADS TO PROFITABLE TURNAROUND

Newly released financial results show that Japanese electronics giant SANYO has bounced back into profitability following its radical refocus on environmental and energy technology. This week, SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) announces its consolidated results for the third quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2007 (Oct.1, 2007 to Dec. 31, 2007). The consolidated sales total rose for the third quarter 1.4% to 597.2 billion yen, compared to the same period last year. The European market enjoyed a 35% increase in sales and despite a sharp rise in raw material costs overall operating profit was up an impressive 74%.

These achievements follow SANYO adopting the 'Think GAIA for life and the earth' corporate vision in 2005 which commits the company to using global resources and skills to develop solutions for sustainable coexistence on Earth.

In a statement issued today SANYO Air Conditioners Europe's president, Masafumi Yoda, explains: "After a few difficult years SANYO is now back on track as can be seen by our positive financial results. At SANYO Air Conditioners Europe we have had a particularly successful year which is being translated into considerable investment in the company since it is seen as a key growth sector for SANYO."

Building on SANYO's recent profit results and the 'Think GAIA' vision SANYO Electric President Seiichiro Sano has also announced a new Mid Term Business Strategy for the three years from FY 2008 to FY 2010. The strategy aims to establish the foundation for SANYO to become a highly profitable company capable to regain public trust and reputation, while becoming 'a leading provider of Environment and Energy-related products'. In line with this a goal to achieve a consolidated operating profit of 100 billion yen or more by FY 2010 has been set and group businesses will be classified into the following three categories according to the business direction and associated technology: 'Energy', 'Electronics' and 'Ecology'.

The 'Ecology' business category, which includes air conditioning products will be strengthened through further capital investment and a sales goal fro FY 2010 is 600 billion yen (approximately 110% up over FY 2007). The European and Chinese air conditioning markets are seen as key markets for future growth by SANYO and so the company will shift management resources to these regions in order to reach its financial goals.

“SANYO's 'Think GAIA' philosophy is now showing results through its many successful product ranges including solar cells with record breaking efficiencies, eneloop rechargeable batteries and highly efficient air conditioning, including a World first with solar air conditioning. UK HEALTH PROTECTION AGENCY CONFIRMS SANYO'S REVOLUTIONARY AIR PURIFYING SYSTEM WITH VIRUS WASHER TECHNOLOGY SUPPRESSES 99.999994% OF AIRBORNE BACTERIA

The British Allergy Foundation Seal of Approval

SANYO Europe Ltd (SANYO), a subsidiary of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., a 'leading provider of Environment- and Energy-related products', announces today that its innovative Air Purifying System equipped with 'Virus Washer technology' (Model: VW-VF10BG) has been proven to suppress 99.999994% of an airborne bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis) from treated air following extensive tests by the UK Health Protection Agency at Porton Down.

People are becoming increasingly concerned with air quality over recent years and hospital 'superbugs' such as 'MRSA' and 'Clostridium difficile' are continuing to cause the health service significant problems. The need for effective methods to combat airborne bacteria, viruses and allergens is ever-increasing and SANYO's Virus Washer technology was developed to do just that. The Virus Washer technology operates by creating electrolyzed water, which is done by combining tap water with electricity. In line with SANYO's 'Think GAIA' brand vision of environmental responsibility, the Virus Washer technology does not require any additional chemicals.

The Virus Washer uses an electrolyzed water disinfecting element to inactivate airborne ineffective agents and allergens. The unit works by electrolyzed water running over the air purification element in the Virus Washer. Indoor air is then forced to circulate through the element, inactivating airborne bacteria and viruses which pass through it.

The Air Purifying System with Virus Washer technology underwent detailed tests at the Biosafety Unit of the UK Health Protection Agency, to test its ability to inactivate airborne contamination. The results not only confirm that the Air Purifying System inactivates over 99.9% of the airborne bacteria it was tested against from treated air but also reveal that bacteria can be reduced to below detectable levels within 5 minutes of starting the system within an enclosed room, measuring 21.3m². The HPA's Biosafety Unit concluded that "if the SANYO Commercial Virus Washer Air Purifier VW-VF10BG is operated according to the manufacturer's instructions it is capable of reducing microbial contamination in the air."

In addition to the testing by the Health Protection Agency, the effectiveness of SANYO's Virus Washer technology against viruses, bacteria, dust mite allergens, pollen and odours has been established by extensive independent testing by leading organisations including the Kitasato Research Center of Environmental Sciences (tested for effectiveness in suppressing influenza*) and Tottori University in Japan (tested for effectiveness in suppressing Avian Influenza—H5 type*) and the Gunma Prefecture Institute of Public Health and Environmental Sciences (tested for effectiveness in suppressing Feline Caliciviridae—a virus comparable to the Norovirus* surrogate).

"The quality of the air we breathe is important for our well-being and in places where people gather, such as schools, hospitals and other public facilities, airborne germs are more prevalent. In such circumstances, it's important that we take the right steps to prevent such airborne contaminants from spreading" said Masafumi Yoda, General Manager of Europe Business Management Division, SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. "Infection control is a hot topic issue for the commercial and health sectors and until now there have not been many effective methods to suppress airborne viruses, bacteria and allergens. In order to tackle this problem, SANYO combined its advanced knowledge of air purification and water technology to develop the Virus Washer technology, which suppresses and removes these contaminants."

In order to meet the demands of larger facilities SANYO developed the VW-VF10BG Air Purifying System for commercial use which is designed for enclosed spaces up to 100m² and is suitable for most large public spaces. The Virus Washer technology utilises tap water, which is freely accessible, and SANYO's proprietary electrolysed water technology to render infectious airborne viruses harmless.

SANYO's Air Purifying System is easy to install and uses single phase 220-240V power. The use of a six litre water tank eliminates the need for water piping and the system can be operated immediately after installation. Operation is simple and involves only the use of an on/off button and the fan speed control.

Further information on SANYO's Air Purifying System with Virus Washer technology can be found at www.viruswasher.eu.

SANYO EUROPEAN AIR CONDITIONING MEDIA SUMMIT HITS THE HEADLINES

New

Twenty editors from across Europe attended SANYO's European Air Conditioning Media Summit 'THINK GAIA – Air Conditioning for a Sustainable Future', 3rd-5th July to hear top industry experts predict the future of the sector. Held at SANYO's new state-of-the-art European manufacturing facility in Budapest, Hungary, the Summit was hailed as a resounding success by editors and organizers alike, with the event forecasting ac market trends, informing editors about contentious changes to the F-gas Regulation and revealing innovative sustainable products, as well as focusing on the ac sector's environmental responsibility.

"'THINK GAIA – Air Conditioning for a Sustainable Future', was a huge success because the event allowed editors to speak directly to key industry figures about crucial issues that are affecting the air conditioning market. With global warming already affecting climate change, sustainability is a major issue for the ac sector. However, the theme of the Summit derives from SANYO's corporate philosophy which follows the concept of 'THINK GAIA – For Life and the Earth'. Under this vision SANYO has committed to using its global resources and skills to develop solutions for a sustainable coexistence on earth resulting in the development of environmentally-friendly products, such as its SANYO PV Air Conditioning System," explains Hugh Dixon, European Marketing Manager, SANYO Air Conditioners Europe.

In line with SANYO's environmental philosophy the Summit agenda comprised presentations on SANYO's 'Think GAIA' corporate vision (Hugh Dixon, marketing manager, SANYO Air Conditioners); The latest air conditioning industry trends (Andrew Giles, general manager, Worldwide Market Intelligence, BSRIA); F-Gas and its implications, (Joop Hoogkamer, secretary general, AREA); Solar air conditioning and other environmental technologies (Graham Wright, product manager, SANYO Air Conditioners); Gas heat pumps – how they can help the environment (Vincent Mahoney, national sales manger Ireland, SANYO Air Conditioners; and SANYO – the future (Masafumi Yoda, executive director, SANYO Europe).

Speaking at the Summit, Andrew Giles, general manager at BSRIA Worldwide Market Intelligence, revealed that the air conditioning industry is already diversifying dramatically due to climate change. "In a bid to meet European CO2 reductions, legislation and funding initiatives are driving demand for energy efficient air conditioning units. The Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EBPD) is already having an effect. However, there is new European legislation coming in all the time with the Energy End Use Directive and several others moving ahead. Demand for energy efficient units to meet legislation is causing air conditioning manufacturers to diversify their product ranges so that they can offer a full range of more sustainable solutions."

Meanwhile, Joop Hoogkamer, secretary general, AREA, updated editors on the most recent developments to the F-gas Regulation during his presentation. "AC engineer certification has been a contentious issue during the drafting of the F-gas Regulation. The European Commission is now considering a multi-tiered approach, followed by a final proposal at the end of August and a final vote of Member States scheduled for October 2007. However, to make the F-gas a success not only does the individual ac engineer need to be qualified but his company also needs to be certified in order to guarantee that the management takes responsibility; that there is commitment to environmental protection; implementation of good working procedures; effective refrigerant control; and adequate service equipment and instrumentation."

The Summit also revealed how SANYO Air Conditioners' pioneering spirit is set to revolutionize the air conditioning industry with 2007 seeing the development of a raft of ground-breaking products including its innovative solar PV air conditioning system and its CO2 heat pump. The SANYO PV Air Conditioning System offers one of the highest conversion efficiencies on the market, while the CO2 ECO heat pump boasts the first ever rotary 2-stage compression system with both units having been developed in line with SANYO's 'Think GAIA' philosophy of environmental responsibility.

The SANYO PV Air Conditioning System offers one of the highest conversion efficiencies on the market and has been developed in line with SANYO's 'THINK GAIA' philosophy of environmental responsibility and 'Sustainable Solutions For The Future'.

SANYO Air Conditioners, as with other SANYO divisions, has always had a strong environmental focus, but in 2005 SANYO took that a stage further basing the whole corporate philosophy on the concept of 'THINK GAIA - for the earth and its people'. Under this vision SANYO has committed to using its global resources and skills to develop solutions for a sustainable coexistence on earth resulting in the development of environmentally-friendly products, such as its SANYO PV Air Conditioning System.

Graham Wright, Product Manager of SANYO Air Conditioners explains: "The pioneering spirit is alive and well with SANYO this year and you can expect to see some really innovative and exciting products coming to the market in 2007. As the first solar powered air conditioning system launched onto the market demand for the SANYO PV system is expected to be high, with a number of projects already being planned in the UK and across Europe."

SANYO, as an organisation, has been involved in rechargeable and renewable energy research since early in its 60-year history. Since the 1970s SANYO has led the world in photovoltaic (solar cell) technology with SANYO solar cells harnessing the energy of the sun to power homes and to irrigate African deserts by desalinating seawater, amongst other applications. Now this technology has been combined with SANYO's heat pumps to produce highly efficient air conditioning systems. The SANYO PV Air Conditioning System uses the strength of SANYO's PV technology combined with cutting edge engineering design to launch a new concept that provides amazing energy efficiency, with the air conditioning system offering a COP up to 7.0 at part load. Developed with a flexible modular design, SANYO's system can be used to add solar power to any of their products including VRF, GHP and split systems.

A typical SANYO PV Split System features include:

  • Integrated power inverter to enable seamless operation whatever the power source;
  • Optimised PV cell location, where three or more cells can be located in various positions to maximize power input;
  • Super quiet noise levels, with indoor sound levels as low as 25dB(A)
  • A compact body, with the heat pump outdoor unit measuring only H: 569mm/ W: 790mm/ D: 285mm;
  • A high efficiency SANYO rotary compressor which includes a two-stage compression system, DC brushless motor and inverter drive, and an extremely efficient motor with high power neodymium magnets.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2007

This year will see the launch of a raft of innovative products which will be showcased at RACO7 while contractors and installers will also benefit from skills centre sessions focused on gas powered air conditioning.

  • SOLAR POWER: SANYO, as an organization, has been involved in rechargeable and renewable energy research since early in its over 50-year history. Today, the company is looking to a higher power for inspiration - the sun. SANYO solar cells have harnessed the energy of the sun to power homes and to irrigate African deserts by desalinating seawater. In 1990, a plane powered by SANYO solar cells actually broke a world record, becoming the first solar powered plane to fly across America. Now SANYO has taken the next step forward – an air conditioning system, which runs on solar power. Demand is expected to be high, with a number of projects already underway in the UK and across Europe.
  • VIRUS WASHER: Over recent years people have become increasingly concerned with air quality but until now there have not been many effective methods to suppress airborne bacteria, viruses and allergens, especially those that exist in large spaces. In order to solve this problem, SANYO has developed the 'Virus Washer' system, which suppresses and removes bacteria without the use of any chemicals. The 'Virus Washer' system utilises tap water, which is very accessible, and SANYO's proprietary electrolysed water technology. The product line up of 'Virus washer' systems ranges from home use to commercial use, providing comfort and safety for everyday life. The new 'Virus Washer' products have already been installed in projects in Japan and will be available in Europe in 2007.
  • CO2 WATER HEATER: This is a product range available in Europe now and is particularly suitable for residential application. Extremely user friendly as well as environment friendly, the system uses natural refrigerant (CO2) to provide hot water with very low GWP compared to HFC. Capable of operating under low ambient temperatures, the units are also extremely economical with high system efficiency, low running costs and low installation cost.
